Nets Rumors: Cam Johnson Offer Sheets Likely to Be Matched; Rockets Linked to RFA

Apr 06, 2023

The Brooklyn Nets are expected to match "any realistic offer sheet" for power forward Cameron Johnson, according to Yahoo Sports' Jake Fischer.

Fischer reported the Houston Rockets have shown interest in the restricted free agent but wrote that Dillon Brooks might be a more attainable target.

Johnson averaged 15.5 points and shot 40.4 percent from three-point range with the Nets and Phoenix Suns in 2022-23. It was an eventful season for the 27-year-old. He missed a little more than two months due to a torn meniscus. Then he got shipped out of Phoenix in the Kevin Durant trade.

The Nets are in a tricky position as they enter their first offseason following the unraveling of their superteam experiment.

Leaning into a full rebuild is tough because so much of Brooklyn's future draft assets are controlled by the Houston Rockets. The return from the Durant trade didn't totally even the scales in that respect.

However, the franchise's ceiling is likely limited for the next few years thanks to Ben Simmons' contract. The three-time All-Star will make $37.9 million in 2023-24 and $40.3 million in 2024-25 before he hits free agency. That's a not insignificant chunk of the salary cap and basically a sunk cost at this point.

Regardless of what path the front office takes, re-signing Johnson is an easy call as long as any outside offer sheet doesn't far exceed his general value on the court. HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reported in April a survey of six NBA executives pegged him at $90 million over four years.

The 6'8" sharpshooter has shown he can help a team with championship aspirations. Through three playoff trips, he's averaging 10.2 points and shooting 41.6 percent from the perimeter.

Should they take a long-term view, Johnson would be a valuable trade chip for the Nets. His skill set makes him a great fit on just about any roster in the league.
